The latest stop on the Novak Roadshow took me to the beautiful Miramar Beach, Florida, to visit Russ and his team at Rainforest Blacklight Golf & Arcade.

Russ operates two locations, but the Miramar Beach site is a fantastic case study in how to grow within a strip mall footprint while maintaining a high-end, immersive feel.

The Layout: Beyond the Blacklight

The core of the facility is a massive, 18-hole indoor blacklight mini-golf course. What impressed me immediately was the thematic bridge. Often, arcades and mini-golf courses feel like two different businesses sharing a roof. At Rainforest, they’ve pulled the artwork and jungle theming from the course directly into the arcade (which houses about 60 games). It keeps the guest "in the story" the entire time they are in the building.

Recently, Russ was able to take over the adjacent space in the strip mall, and he used that expansion to lean into two very different attractions:

  1. An XD Dark Ride for high-energy immersion.

  2. A dedicated Claw Arcade room.

Managing the "Rainy Day" Rush

XD Dark Ride by Triotech

One of the smartest strategic moves Russ made was the addition of the XD Dark Ride. We all know that in a vacation market like Miramar Beach, a rainy day can be both a blessing and a curse. When the clouds roll in, the wait times for an 18-hole mini-golf course can get "crazy" fast.

The XD Dark Ride was specifically chosen to act as a "buffer" attraction. It gives kids and teens a high-intensity, 4D experience to jump into while they wait for their tee time. It keeps them on-site, keeps them spending, and—most importantly—keeps them happy while the golf course is at capacity. It’s a perfect example of using an attraction not just for its own ROI, but as a crowd-management tool.

The Strategy: The "Claw Room" Hybrid

Claw games

The "Claw Arcade" concept is something I watch closely. We’ve seen these locations thrive as standalone businesses, but they often struggle when an operator tries to simply "mix" them into an existing FEC arcade floor. In those cases, the claw games often get lost in the shuffle of traditional redemption and video games.

Rainforest is trying something unique: they have a full-service arcade in the main room, but a separate, dedicated space for the claw games with its own "trade-up" redemption center.

By physically separating the "win-every-time" energy of the claw room from the rest of the floor, they’ve given the concept the space it needs to breathe. This separation might be the secret sauce to making the hybrid model work.

Operations: The "Keep It Simple" Birthday Model

Birthday Party rules

One of my biggest takeaways was their approach to birthday parties. In the FEC world, we often over-complicate birthdays with food prep, catering, and heavy staffing.

Rainforest uses a "Space & Attractions Only" model:

  • They provide the room and the fun.

  • The parents are responsible for the food, the cake, and the cleanup.

At Planet Novak, we’ve seen the same thing—people want the venue and the games more than they want us to be their caterer. By keeping it simple, Russ reduces his overhead and staffing headaches while still providing exactly what the market is asking for. It’s a low-friction, high-margin way to handle the weekend birthday rush.

The Star Game

Find a key game

If you’re looking for a "money maker" for your floor, their most popular piece right now is a "Find a Key" style game with built-in lockers. There is something about the physical nature of finding a key and unlocking a big prize that resonates with guests across all demographics. If you don't have a locker-style game on your floor, you're leaving money on the table.

Final Thoughts

A huge thank you to Russ for the hospitality and for taking me out for a fantastic Cajun dinner on Fat Tuesday! If you find yourself in the Florida Panhandle, Rainforest Blacklight Golf & Arcade is a "must-visit" to see how a clean, well-themed, and operationally smart facility is run.
